It was a day of celebration and high quality rugby as the Kinsale Men’s First Team won v Charleville to secure promotion to the top division of Munster Junior Rugby.
A large crowd came out on a cold but (mostly) sunny day and cheered on a team who’ve been great value all season. The boys were given a guard of honour by our girls U12 team and every thing was set for great day at Snugmore.
Of course Charleville hadn’t read the script and they showed their quality getting under our posts for an early 7 points. Worried glances on the home terrace!
But this quality team were soon flying and winger David O’Looney slipped in for the perfect response. Paul Graham went over next to give the home side the lead and Dylan Lacey put some more distance on the fancy new score board.
Great hands saw David Evans go over next as Kinsale began to move through the gears. A fine Callum Fennell try meant the bonus point was up as the rainbow came out, and the half time whistle went.
The U12 girls put on a fine half time show match, and our boys were obviously inspired with Robin O’Flynn going over for a well worked try after half time. Stalemate then for a good portion of time, as changes were rung.
Then possibly the moment of the day came as prop Mattie O’Donovan - one of many younger players creating depth in this squad - jinked, sidestepped and handed off on his way to a 30m try, complete with a swan dive finish. The terrace went wild!
Another hot prospect in Evan Lehane put one on the board for the backs finishing off some slick handling and going over under the posts. Dylan Lacey again with the extras.
The full time whistle went at 45-7 and the Kinsale Men’s Firsts are promoted for the first time since 2014. After being so close these last few years, we will savour this moment. 🏉🏉
